The Kandıra Namazgah Reservoir is a critical drinking water supply for the districts of Derince, İzmit and Körfez. This project involves the preparation of a Revised Watershed Conservation Plan to ensure the protection, improvement and sustainable use of the reservoir and its basin.
The study includes a detailed assessment of the basin’s physical, geological, hydrogeological, hydrological, hydromorphological, ecological and socio-economic characteristics, forming the scientific basis for conservation decisions.
Key components of the project include:
Identification and mapping of pollution sources and loads at sub-basin scale
GIS-based mapping of domestic, industrial and solid waste discharges
Georeferencing water sampling points and mapping analytical results
Water quality modelling and interpretation of model outputs
Delineation of protection zones and digital mapping of conservation boundaries
Evaluation of ecological structure, land use, groundwater abstraction points and hydromorphology
The project also develops recommendations addressing wastewater treatment needs, solid waste management, industrial pollution, mining activities, erosion-prone areas and environmentally sensitive zones in order to minimize risks to water quality.
This comprehensive conservation plan ensures sustainable protection of the Namazgah Reservoir through scientifically grounded environmental management strategies.
