The Denizli Pond, located within the district of Gebze in Kocaeli, is an essential drinking and domestic water resource. Within the scope of this ongoing project, our company is conducting a comprehensive basin-wide assessment to ensure the long-term protection and improvement of the reservoir’s water quality and quantity. This includes detailed analyses of the basin’s geological, hydrogeological, hydrological, hydromorphological, ecological and socio-economic characteristics. Land-use dynamics, groundwater–surface water interactions, basin water budget, pollutant sources and hydrogeochemical structure are evaluated through extensive field surveys, monitoring programs, laboratory analyses and GIS-based modelling.
The project also involves the identification of both point and diffuse pollution sources, calculation of pollutant loads, assessment of groundwater quality, delineation of drainage networks, and preparation of 1:25,000-scale thematic maps, including water quality, land use, geology and risk distribution layers. In addition, mathematical water quality models are being developed to simulate future conditions under various pressure scenarios, providing a scientific foundation for determining the absolute, short-, medium- and long-distance protection zones of the basin. These modelling results guide the formulation of feasible mitigation measures addressing agricultural activities, industrial discharges, mining areas, livestock operations, settlements and solid waste pressures.
Upon completion, the project will deliver an integrated Watershed Conservation Plan for the Denizli Pond, outlining basin protection provisions, water quality standards, monitoring programs and a detailed implementation roadmap. This plan will support Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality–ISU in achieving long-term, sustainable water resource management for one of the region’s most critical reservoirs.
